Playing with a Deeper Purpose

Beyond the tactical mastery and precision passing he brings to Jesse Marsch’s midfield, Eustáquio plays with immense personal motivation. The 29-year-old midfielder has endured profound personal tragedies over the last few years, losing both his mother, Esmeralda, to brain cancer in April 2023, and his father, Armando, just over a year later.

Dedicated to his family back home and his brother Mauro (a former footballer turned coach), Eustáquio has accumulated 61 appearances and 6 goals for the national team since committing his senior international career to Canada in 2019.

With South Africa vanquished, Eustáquio and Canada now head to Houston for a historic Round of 16 clash against the winner of the Netherlands vs. Morocco matchup.

The group stage of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup has wrapped up, whittling the field down from 48 teams to the final 32. For the first time in tournament history, a Round of 32 single-elimination stage has been introduced, leaving 16 nations headed home and 32 moving forward into the knockouts.
